A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
