Colombia's Leader Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Once More' should United States Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the rhetoric in their verbal conflict, increasing strains between the two countries after US forces struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has cocaine mills and cocaine factories and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Escalating Tensions and Accusations

Speaking to the press on Sunday, the US president suggested similar military action against Bogotá, asserting the country is “very sick too” and led by an unwell individual who likes making narcotics and trafficking it to America."

While Colombia is the leading producer of cocaine, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Relationship

This nation has long been a key ally of Washington in the fight against narcotics trade and benefited from bipartisan support in Washington, but relations have soured markedly after Trump came to office.

The nation's illicit drug economy is largely controlled by guerrilla factions like the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom disbanded subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

The President's Defiant Answer

When asked whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the 1990s, rejected these allegations. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks uninformed. End the false accusations," he expressed in a post.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will turn into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And if they detain the president, which many of the country loves and respects, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated some years as a young man as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed to have ever engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in drafting the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and eventually served as a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the presidency.

"I pledged to never again hold a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I would take up arms again," he said.

Heightened Measures and Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Petro's personal security was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump, but voices from across Colombian politics have condemned the threats of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Political and Financial Sanctions

The US revoked his travel authorization after he urged US troops to ignore unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed financial sanctions against the president, his spouse and various associates.

Simultaneously as the US increased its military presence in the region and striking suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
