The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
